"Son of a bitch," I hissed, digging my fingernails into the mortar holding together the bricks of my balcony window. A week had passed with nothing to do, no tours of the city or rebel attacks or even the princess duties I'd expected to be dumped on me. I'd been left to my own devices, little more than a decorative bit of furniture, and I was bored.

Plus, I needed my own supply of fog's ruin just in case I encountered the Haar on my escape from the goblin lands.

Three weeks to go, and then I was out of here.

"Shit," I hissed when the toe of my boot slipped from where I’d wedged it between bricks. I missed my rubber shoes so damn badly. Missed my gloves, too; my fingers were already raw at the tips, my palms scraped and fingernails ragged. But if that was the price of exploring this city by myself, so be it.

Breath hissed through my clenched teeth as I held onto the wall by sheer stubbornness and grit. I fumbled for somewhere more stable to balance my boot, hanging there for a second to catch my breath before I began to climb down. It was lucky I'd spent years scaling buildings in Seagrave, or I'd never have made this descent.

But it felt good to be doing something, to not be shut in my room or sprawled across the sofa in the courtyard waiting for something interesting to happen. With Calanthe at my side, I'd toured the castle twice from top to bottom, but there were only so many mirrors and marble busts I could look at before it became dull. Even the secret doors had lost their sheen of curiosity, even if I made a mental note of where each led to.

I had my escape route planned, had imagined a hundred different ways I'd finally confront Kier about Natasya's death, but the waiting was killing me. If I attacked him now, he'd survive. Fucking goblin royalty and their invulnerability.

"Thank fuck," I grunted when I finally landed on the ground, grass softening the final drop from a windowsill. The bag slung around my body smacked my thigh as I fought to steady my balance.

I batted a strand of auburn hair from my face and scanned the grassy space between me and the castle wall. Empty of guards, though I doubted they were far away. I stepped into a shadow and followed it, flattening myself to a rounded tower wall with a hiss when footsteps crunched the grass.

Hairs rose along the back of my neck as they neared, and I seriously hoped my dark leggings and long-sleeved shirt would camouflage me in the darkness. A soft wind moved through my ponytail, and I fought a shiver, praying it didn't carry my scent to the person getting closer with every footstep.
